ENGLISH OF OCCUPATIONAL PURPOSES
The course will cover a range of topics that is related to occupational needs such as workplace communications, business correspondences and effective presentations. Learners will learn common language functions and to utilize them appropriately in work place situations. Exercises and practical in-class sessions will be conducted to give learners a view of English communication needs in the work place.

ACADEMIC WRITING SKILLS
This course is designed to develop students’ competence in academic writing. It introduces students to the skills needed to become effective writers. The approach adopted in the course is the process-centred approach. Students will be guided through the main stages in academic writing such as pre-writing, outlining, drafting and revising which will enable them to produce well-organised and adequately develop essays. The course also exposes students to typical rhetorical modes or organizational patterns in academic writing modelled by selected reading articles, which they can later draw on in their university work. Emphasis is also given to creative and critical thinking which are integral to the process of academic writing. Grammatical items and patterns pertinent to academic writing are taught in the course to develop the analytical skills needed by the student to edit their written work.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
This course helps students to develop confidence and skills to interact and deliver public speeches effectively using the norms and etiquette required of those who speak the language. To begin with, students are introduced to the theories of speech communication and guidelines on the preparation and delivery of public speeches. Students will be trained to generate, develop and organize ideas into speeches, either to inform, persuade and or entertain specific audiences. Listening and speaking skills are also emphasized in the course.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES
Listening/speaking, reading, writing, and grammar are covered each week throughout the course. For listening/speaking component, the session is done in the Language Lab, where students learn English with the aid of languages software. To improve students’ reading skills, they are taught various sub-skills, including skimming, scanning’, inferring, finding main ideas etc. Writing is done at the paragraph level, with students getting acquainted with paragraph organization, topic sentence and supporting details. Students also learn and internalize the grammatical rules on tenses, question formation, negation etc.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION 1
This course is designed for students with limited English language proficiency. It provides the students with a variety of real-life situations which enable them to communicate their thoughts, opinions, feelings and queries. A variety of reading passages and dialogues are utilized to increase students’ language input while numerous written works are assigned to improve their language output. Relevant grammatical structures including correct use of sentence structures and vocabulary are systematically presented and practised throughout the course.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION 2
This course is designed to further enhance students’ English language skills necessary for their academic success at the university. Students will be assigned various types of reading texts in order to build their vocabulary, increase reading fluency and develop critical thinking skills. They will develop their writing skills through process writing approach. To ensure accuracy of the language usage, emphasis is placed on sentence structure, word choice and grammatical rules.
